Golden Hour Family Sessions Are The Best
Did you know Arizona is known for its incredible sunsets? As a family portrait photographer, I often schedule sessions around sunset, during what’s known as the golden hour. This time of day offers the best natural lighting—soft, warm, and easy to work with. The sun isn’t harsh, there are fewer shadows, and the temperature is more comfortable, making it an ideal time for outdoor family photos.
Sunset sessions have an added bonus: the sky can change dramatically from one day to the next. Especially near Phoenix, you never know what kind of sunset you’re going to get. Some evenings are filled with bold oranges and reds, while others showcase a mix of pastels and softer hues. No matter the conditions, the evening light adds a beautiful touch to each shot.
For this family session, the timing was perfect—right as the sun began to set, the sky turned a bright orange. It added an extra layer to the photos, creating a vibrant background that highlights the connection between the family members. Check out the images and click on them to get a closer look.
Capturing a Kid's Personality, Not Just Poses
During this session, I also wanted to capture the personality of the little boy, Abnar. Initially, I had imagined him making goofy, silly faces—like many kids do at that age—maybe showing off a big smile or pretending to be an animal with his hands. But as we got started, I quickly realized Abnar isn’t a big fan of photos. He has a quieter personality, and I wanted to make sure that came through in the images. While he didn’t go for the silly faces, I was able to capture who he truly is. It’s those honest moments that matter most in family photos—showing each person just as they are.
